BACKGROUND
INFORMATION
In 1992, the Thames Valley State Technical College and
the Mohegan Community College were combined by State mandate to form a
comprehensive, publicly supported Community-Technical College serving the
diverse educational needs of the residents of Southeastern Connecticut. The
College was renamed Three Rivers Community- Technical College but remained a
two campus institution. The two current locations, the Mohegan Campus at Mahan
Drive, and the Thames Valley Campus at 574 New London Turnpike, are both
State-owned and located in Norwich. The campuses serve commuters exclusively
and are located four miles apart. Maintaining and operating separate locations
combined with insufficient and our-of-date space and equipment has resulted in
major inefficiencies, and a gradual loss of enrollments in some programs.
In
1994, the Board of Trustees of Community-Technical Colleges, approved
co-location of the two existing campuses. This consolidation will permit
extensive program modernization, significantly improved operating
efficiencies, and greatly expanded community service facilities for the
benefit of Southeastern Connecticut. The State has authorized $61
million, of which $57 million is immediately accessible, for this
project.
Three
Rivers College is the premier provider of intellectual capital to the
businesses in the greater Southeastern Connecticut region. With a full and
part-time faculty and staff of almost 400 employees to provide the skilled
workforce and training needed by the area, Three Rivers College serves as a
major driving force for regional economic development.
Three
Rivers currently enrolls over 3,500 students in credit courses and over 2,000
students in credit-free offerings. The diverse curriculum includes associate
degrees in liberal arts, business, computer science, criminal justice,
nursing, travel and tourism, human services, early childhood education,
computer-aided drafting, photonics, and assorted engineering technology
programs, including architectural and civil engineering, electrical
engineering, environmental engineering, manufacturing and mechanical
engineering, and nuclear engineering.
Through its Continuing Education and Community Services Division, Three Rivers College serves the region with a wide array of cultural, personal development, and general education activities. Through the College's Business and Industry Services Network, courses can be custom-designed to meet the training and professional development needs of the business in Southeastern Connecticut. Moreover, as one of twelve colleges in a State-wide Community Technical College System, Three Rivers is able to call upon a full range of State services and programs to satisfy all community requirements.
